Curriculum
Pediatric Level 1 (PL1)
The first year of residency was designed specifically to allow interns to focus on patient management skills in the ambulatory clinics, newborn medicine, general inpatient and inpatient cardiac care. There are additional rotations in developmental and behavioral pediatrics, as well as two elective blocks. A single month in the NICU serves as an introduction to issues specific to premature infants and complex issues of newborn medicine. Education takes place at all patient interactions, with teaching and supervision by senior residents, fellows, and faculty. Pediatric interns are strongly encouraged to participate in all procedures including but not limited to venipuncture, IV placement, arterial puncture, lumbar puncture, suturing, and neonatal resuscitation. The structure of the first year allows ample time for reading, as well as broadening the general knowledge base, as well as patient assessment and management skills, and procedural skills which will be required in the second and third years.
Pediatric Level 2 (PL2)
The second year of residency is structured to strengthen and broaden the resident’s knowledge base and comfort with assessment and management of both ill and critically ill patients. Further rotations include Emergency Medicine, Adolescent Medicine, Outpatient Urgent Care Clinic, and elective time. The second year of residency provides ample opportunity for residents to enhance their skills in the roles of supervisor and teacher.
Pediatric Level 3 (PL3)
As a senior resident, one assumes maximum responsibility in all areas of patient management and provides significant supervision and teaching of junior residents, medical students and peers. Education is further enhanced through a community experience rotation which includes exposure to the local hospice program, Cuyahoga County Poison Control Center, Juvenile Detention Center and the Gay/Lesbian/Transgender/Bisexual Centers. A research block month allows one to finalize projects performed during the residency. More elective time enables each resident to pursue his/her own subspecialty or research areas of interest. At this level, a resident will be able to handle almost all common and complex pediatric problems.
