The legendary Dr. Benjamin Spock (1903 – 1998) touched millions of lives through his best-selling books and commentary on child care.

His legacy lives on for a new generation of parents through MetroHealth’s own Dr. Robert Needlman, a renowned child development specialist and revising author of Dr. Spock’s Baby & Child Care 9th Edition.

Drs. Spock and Needlman are inspirations to MetroHealth. Since our founding in 1837, we’ve had a particular focus on the needs of infants, children and teenagers, eventually opening a children’s hospital in 1899 to combat the high infant and child mortality rate of the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Today we remain a leading provider of children’s health services and celebrate the principles that Dr. Spock has taught families over the years.
