Pulmonology
The Division of Pulmonology has been headed by David
Birnkrant, MD since its inception in 1991. Dr. Birnkrant currently attends 4 to
5 outpatient clinics per week and is responsible for inpatient pulmonology
consultations, the infant sleep study program and flexible bronchoscopies. The
major diagnoses seen by the division include: pediatric asthma, chronic wheezing
and cough, infant apnea and sleep studies, respiratory complications of
pediatric neuromuscular diseases, BPD, congenital anomalies of the lungs and
airway, pediatric sleep apnea, respiratory complications of medically fragile
and neurologically complex children, home ventilators and tracheostomies,
stridor and recurrent croup, and all other aspects of pediatric pulmonology. Dr.
Birnkrant's research interests include respiratory complications of pediatric
neuromuscular diseases, in which area Dr. Birnkrant has written articles and
been involved at a national level. Other ongoing research projects relate to the
effects of noninvasive ventilation and the clinical implications of infant sleep
study results.
