The Children's Hospital at MetroHealth Medical Center
PICU
The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at MetroHealth
Medical Center is a state-of-the-art 10-bed unit that was recently
completely renovated. Children of all ages requiring intensive monitoring and therapy are
cared for by a dedicated team of physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, child life
workers, social workers and support staff.
Each year, over 800 critically ill and injured children are admitted to the
PICU. Because of MetroHealth's designation as a Level I trauma center, a
large percentage of these children have suffered traumatic injuries.
However, the PICU also cares for children with severe asthma, respiratory
illnesses, diabetes and shock, to name but a few. All children admitted to
the PICU are cared for by board-certified pediatric intensive care
specialists. In addition, subspecialists from a broad range of specialties
(cardiology, infectious diseases, gastroenterology, etc) can be called to
help care for our PICU patients.
In 2007, the MetroHealth PICU underwent a major renovation. Our 10-bed
unit was completely redesigned with both patient care and family-centered care
in mind. Each of the rooms has a pull-out sleeper sofa, a desk for family
members and a DVD player for the child. Warm earth tones help make the
PICU as welcoming as possible. In addition to family-centered
care, the PICU offers the latest in technology including state-of-the-art
ventilators, invasive and non-invasive monitoring, as well as desktop computers
for charting. A three-bed chronic vent unit and a two-bed deep
sedation unit are also housed in the new PICU.
