We believe the source of our residents' strong clinical capabilities is the intensive and extensive clinical experience they receive on rotation through the Case Western Reserve University program at MetroHealth Medical Center.  All requirements of the residency review committee of the ACGME and American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology are met or exceeded.

Consult Liaison: a minimum of two months PGY-1, 2 & 3.

Inpatient psychiatry: a minimum of six months PGY-1, 2, 3 & 4.

Emergency psychiatry: a minimum of two months PGY-1 & 2.

PGY-1

From the very beginning of training at The MetroHealth System, psychiatry residents will have the opportunity to follow patients from the acute crisis stage in the emergency room to stabilization in our inpatient units. During the inpatient rotation residents get in site exposure to ECT. Residents will learn to manage psychiatric illness in the medically ill during the Consult Liaison rotation.

A minimum of four-months in a primary care clinical setting that provides comprehensive and continuous patient care in specialties such as internal medicine, family practice and emergency medicine.  

PGY-2

During the second year, residents not only have the opportunity to build on their diagnostic and therapeutic skills in the inpatient setting, but also have the opportunity for intensive clinical experience in addiction psychiatry, as well as seeing patients in their continuity clinic (PGY-2, 3, & 4).

PGY-3 & 4

During the third and fourth year, residents have the opportunity for full-time outpatient clinical exposure in MetroHealth's Community Mental Health Clinic, as well as focusing on mental illness in the intellectually disabled in our highly coveted Intellectual Disability rotation. 

Six-month rotation in Community Mental Health.

One-month rotation in Geriatric Psychiatry.

Three months of elective rotations.
