MetroHealth Cares
Research and Education
Our research initiatives have led to cutting-edge treatments for patients, including:
Dorian of Cleveland: When Dorian's body did not respond to common blood pressure medications, Dr. Mark Dunlap used an innovative, new surgery to control Dorian's high blood pressure. This enabled Dorian to return to a normal lifestyle in which he could play with his five children.
Christie of Shaker Heights: When Christie discovered that one of her twin boys would have a birth defect, another institution told her to abort that baby. Christie got a second opinion and our maternal-fetal medicine specialists helped her have a successful pregnancy — and two baby boys.
Scott of Westlake: Following a diving accident, Scott was paralyzed from the neck down. MetroHealth's Dr. Anthony DiMarco implanted in Scott a device he created that restored the ability for Scott to cough — a life-saving reflex that is impossible for paraplegics.

MetroHealth's Maternal-Fetal Medicine Program is one of the best in the United States, and is one of just 14 centers selected to participate in the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Maternal-Fetal Medicine Units research network. The work done in this section has led to nationwide changes in obstetrical care, and means Cuyahoga County residents have access to leading edge obstetrical care and treatments.
