Community Breast Cancer Outreach BREAST Program


Bringing Education, Advocacy, and Support Together (BREAST)

The MetroHealth System: BREAST is a community outreach program that works to improve the breast health of uninsured and underinsured minorities.BREAST is a community outreach program that works to improve the breast health of uninsured and underinsured minorities. The program provides:

  • Free clinical breast exams in the community by MetroHealth doctors 
  • Free mammograms in the community in the MammoVan (mobile van)
  • Free mammograms at MetroHealth Medical Center
  • Free or reduced-cost follow-up care at MetroHealth Medical Center
  • Free breast cancer education for individuals or groups
  • Free patient navigation  

We Serve Women Who:

  • are over age 35
  • are uninsured or underinsured 
  • are low-income
  • live in Cuyahoga county
  • have not had a mammogram in one year
  • want a safe place to be heard, respected, and cared for  

Community Breast Screenings and Health Fairs

The MetroHealth System: Four health fairs are held annually in community centers, homeless shelters, and churches in greater Cleveland.The BREAST program hosts three health fairs each year at community centers, churches, and other locations in Cleveland. More than 500 volunteers, including doctors, nurses, social workers, and community members participate. Free food, child care, and bus passes are available for patients who attend.

At each event, MetroHealth provides:

  • Bilingual staff
  • Free clinical breast exams
  • Free mammograms in the MammoVan
  • Free breast cancer education by certified Amigas Unidas volunteers 
  • Free follow-up for abnormal exams by MetroHealth doctors with assistance from patient navigators
  • Other health screenings including blood pressure, glucose (blood sugar), cholesterol, HIV testing, and pap exams in a mobile clinic van 
  • Information and resources from more than 30 social service agencies that attend 

The BREAST and Amigas programs are funded by Susan G. Komen for the Cure Northeast Ohio, American Cancer Society, National Breast Cancer Foundation, PNC Bank and the William Bingham Foundation.
