Department of Surgery Laparoscopic Colon Surgery

Laparoscopic Surgery | Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery

About Laparoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopic surgery is an operation performed through incisions that are smaller than those made in traditional "open" surgery. Smaller incisions mean that most people have less pain and usually go home and back to work faster. The operation is performed through a few small (less than an inch) incisions using long, thin instruments and a small video camera to guide your surgeon.

Benefits of laparoscopic surgery:

  • Less pain after surgery
  • Smaller scars
  • Faster recovery time
  • Shorter time in the hospital
  • Faster return to work
  • There may be less internal scarring

Who can have laparoscopic colon surgery?

Most people having surgery on their colon can have it done laparoscopically. Every case is different, though, and your surgeon will need to discuss the best approach for your surgery with you.

About Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS)

Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS) is laparoscopic surgery performed through one small incision in the belly-button. The same video camera and long, thin instruments are used as in traditional laparoscopic surgery. However, using a special device, all of the instruments are inserted through one small incision.

Benefits of SILS:

  • Only one scar - usually hidden in the belly-button
  • Less pain after surgery
  • Faster recovery time
  • Shorter time in the hospital
  • Faster return to work
  • Maybe less internal scarring

Who can have SILS colon surgery?

Most people having surgery on their colon can have it done with a single incision. Every case is different, though, and your surgeon will need to discuss the best approach for your surgery with you.
