What is Minimally Invasive Surgery?
Also known as laparoscopy, minimally invasive surgery is still considered a pioneering approach that reduces post-surgery recovery time, scarring, pain and overall risk. Innovative technology and physician expertise are the hallmarks of successful programs in minimally invasive surgery. Our surgeons have extensive training in the use of sophisticated surgical techniques employing tiny pencil-size cameras and instruments small enough to be inserted through incisions that are in less than a half-inch in length.
Is Minimally Invasive Surgery Right for Me?
Not all individuals and not all procedures qualify for minimally invasive approaches. However, if your physician determines that you are a good candidate, you will reap many benefits:
- Procedures are often done on an outpatient basis or involve just an overnight stay
- Less pain medication is required
- Less risk of infection
- Fewer complications
- Smaller (hardly visible) scars
- Faster recovery
What Patients are Saying
"I worried about surgery and put it off for years, until the MetroHealth doctors told me what I could expect if I had my hysterectomy through minimally invasive surgery. Within three to five days after the surgery, I was back on my feet. It was actually easy to recover from. The scars are so small. It even motivated me to lose weight!" "Kate" —MetroHealth patient
"After many unsuccessful diet attempts I decided to have a gastric bypass through minimally invasive techniques. I have lost 185 pounds and my life has changed dramatically. Three years ago, I would often visualize myself being thin. Now I am living that dream. I will be forever grateful to my surgeon, surgical staff, nurses, counselors, nutritionists, and everyone else at MetroHealth for supporting me and guiding me along the way." "Pat" —MetroHealth patient
