About MedGem®
MedGem® measures your resting metabolic rate with a simple 5-10 minute breath test. By multiplying this measurement by an activity factor, you can see how many calories you need to maintain your current weight. A dietitian will use this figure to help you determine the calories you need to gain or lose weight.
Why Do I Need to Know My Resting Metabolic Rate?
Your resting metabolic rate is the amount of calories your body burns to maintain body functions, including your breathing, heart beating, and brain function. The resting metabolic rate accounts for up to 75% of the calories you burn each day; you burn the remainder of calories through activity. In order to lose weight you need to take in fewer calories than your body burns. Knowing your metabolic rate allows you to establish a calorie budget that will help you be successful with weight loss or weight gain.
How can you find out how many calories your body is using each day? The Nutrition Clinic can help you determine your daily calorie needs by using a device called the MedGem® indirect calorimeter.
