When Less is More

Innovative technology and physician expertise are the hallmarks of successful programs in minimally invasive surgery. Our gynecologic surgeons have extensive training in the use of sophisticated surgical techniques employing tiny, pencil-size cameras and instruments small enough to be inserted through incisions that are sometimes only an inch in length.

Also known as laparoscopy, minimally invasive surgery is still considered a pioneering approach that reduces post-surgery recovery time, scarring, pain and overall risk.

Minimally invasive surgery is often used in the following procedures:

Patient Stories

“I worried about surgery and put it off for years, until the MetroHealth doctors told me what I could expect if I had my hysterectomy through minimally invasive surgery. Within three to five days after the surgery, I was back on my feet.  It was actually easy to recover from. The scars are so small. It even motivated me to lose weight!”
—Kate

"For 17 years, I had troublesome menstrual periods, often with pain and heavy bleeding. I finally consulted a new physician at MetroHealth, Dr. Pollard, and you can imagine my shock to learn that I had uterine cancer. His concern was so genuine.  He even called me the night beore my hysterectomy surgery to reassure me. I only spent one night in the hospital, and my tiny scars were completely healed by my follow-up appointment."
—Robin

What are the benefits?

  • The procedure can often be done outpatient, or involves a very short hospital stay
  • Less pain medication is required
  • Fewer complications
  • Smaller (hardly visible) scars
