Obstetrics and Gynecology Maternal Fetal Medicine Fellowship

Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship
MetroHealth Medical Center
at Case Western Reserve University

Brian M. Mercer, MD, Fellowship Director

MetroHealth Medical Center offers the sole fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine affiliated with Case Western Reserve University and the only Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship Program in Northern Ohio.  Currently, we have one fellow at each level.

The faculty and fellows in the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine are primarily responsible for the care of high-risk patients for MetroHealth Medical Center, Case Western Reserve University.  We provide high-risk obstetric consultation and care in our Outpatient High-Risk Pregnancy Clinics in our Women's and Children’s Pavilion, our newly designed Inpatient High-Risk Obstetrics Unit, our recently renovated Labor and Delivery Suites, and in our state-of-the-art American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine-certified Fetal Diagnostic Center.  MetroHealth Medical Center provides health care to an inner-city population, delivering ~3,500 infants in the year 2005.  Fellows have ample exposure to obstetric ultrasound, diagnostic procedures and complicated clinical obstetrics during their clinical rotations, and are expected to develop their skills as consultants to other obstetric caregivers. The three-year board-approved program offers 18 months of research/academic time as well as an opportunity for elective rotations. The Division offers clinical research expertise in prematurity, premature rupture of the membranes, diabetes, hypertensive disease, maternal and fetal physiology, clinical obstetrics, prenatal diagnosis/genetics and statistics. Additionally, there is ongoing basic research in fetal/placental physiology and insulin signaling for interested fellows.

The Division includes Dr. Brian Mercer (Professor, Division Director, Fellowship Director), Dr. Patrick Catalano (Professor and Chairman), Dr. Jennifer Bailit, Dr. Amy Merlino, Dr. Judette Louis, Dr. Stephen Myers and Dr. LeRoy Dierker (Professor Emeritus). Dr. Jennifer Bailit offers expertise in Epidemiology and Health-outcomes research.  Dr. Sylvie Hauguel de-Mouzon, PhD, our Director of Research, provides didactic experience in research design, analysis and presentation through our research conferences.  In addition to the above faculty, the Division collaborates with Dr. Carol Crowe (pediatric Genetics) and two certified genetic counselors, as well as Dr. John Moore (Director of Neonatology) and the Division of Neonatology in clinical, educational and research programs directed towards our Fellows in Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Neonatology.  Dr. Dennis Super conducts a two-semester course in biostatistics and research design, and is available to provide biostatistical support to the Department as needed.
