Preparation

Your doctor will explain your surgical procedure and let you know if you need to have tests done prior to your surgery date. You will receive directions about where and when to arrive for your surgery. You will be asked not to eat or drink after midnight the night before. Your doctor or nurse will explain any additional things you will need to do before surgery, they will also answer any questions you may have.

Surgery Waiting Area

While you are in surgery, your family can wait in the Surgery Waiting Area. The Surgery Waiting Area is found near the surgical rooms on the first floor of the Critical Care Pavilion.

Post-Anesthesia Care Unit

After your surgery, you will be taken to the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit. When you have recovered from the anesthesia, you will be taken to your room. While your nurse is caring for you, your family and friends can wait in the waiting area. After you have awakened, your family is welcome to visit.

Care After Surgery

It is important that you begin to get out of bed and do coughing and deep breathing exercises after your surgery. Your nurse will assist you. You may have some pain. Please tell your nurse as soon as your pain begins so the pain medicine your doctor ordered can be given to you. Usually, after surgery you can have liquids. Once you are able to tolerate fluids, your doctor will order solid food.
