The Weight Loss Surgery Program
What to Expect From Weight Loss Surgery
The overall quality of life is improved. Many weight loss surgery patients express elation on being able to do things that may seem trivial to the non-obese person, such as going to the store, playing with their children, getting in and out of a car, riding a roller coaster, shopping for regular sized clothes, and more. Weight loss is variable from patient to patient but on average you can expect to lose 60–80% of excess body weight following Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass surgery, 50–80% following sleeve gastrectomy and 40–60% of excess body weight following Laparoscopic Gastric Banding (LAP-BAND). Substantial weight loss occurs in the first 12 to 24 months after surgery. Typically, weight loss surgery at MetroHealth is performed laparoscopically (minimal invasive surgery). Patients will often experience shorter hospital stays, smaller incisions and quicker recovery periods.
In addition to weight loss, surgery has been found to have a beneficial effect on many medical conditions, such as:
- Diabetes
- Hypertension
- Acid reflux
- Sleep apnea
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
- Urinary stress incontinence
- Low back pain, and many other forms of pain
- In addition, many patients report an improvement in mood and other aspects of psychosocial functioning after surgery
