Hospital Medicine

The Division of Hospital Medicine at MetroHealth Medical Center consists of 8 full-time faculty members who specialize in the care of the hospitalized patient.

Patient Care
Hospital Medicine faculty provide patient care in a number of settings. Our primary focus is the care of the hospitalized medical patient. We see patients who have a wide variety of reasons to be hospitalized, but a few of the more common problems are: pneumonia, congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, complications of diabetes, and skin infections.

We also run a Medicine Consult Service in conjunction with the Division of General Internal Medicine. The purpose of this service is to assist other specialists to care for patients with multiple medical problems.

The final component of our clinical service is the Pre-surgical evaluation of patients. Before surgery, most patients with medical problems benefit from evaluation by a pre-surgical specialist to optimize their condition prior to undergoing the stress of anesthesia and surgery.

Our faculty members do not have outpatient practices outside of the preoperative clinic. This allows us to focus on our hospitalized patients throughout the course of each day.

Education
Hospital Medicine faculty cover half of the attending slots on the inpatient medical services. As a result we contribute extensively to the education and training of Internal Medicine Residents and Medical Students. Four of our faculty members have leadership roles in the Medicine Residency Program

Quality Improvement
The Division of Hospital Medicine prides itself on our numerous projects established to continuously improve the care of our patients. These projects involve health care professionals from other disciplines including nursing, social work, pharmacy, and case management.  Recent and current projects include: development  of clinical best practice guidelines linked to the inpatient medical record for COPD, pneumonia, and congestive heart failure; improving transition of care; teaching quality improvement to residents; and antimicrobial stewardship.

Research
Research activities in the Division are focused on the evaluation and dissemination of our quality improvement initiatives, educational innovations and use of the electronic medical record to improve patient care.
