Medical Student Electives
Pediatric Medicine
The Pediatric Department is one of the largest providers
of health care to infants, children, and to adolescents in greater Cleveland.
More than 45 full-time faculty supervise residents, medical students, and other
health professionals in serving more than 3,000 inpatient admissions and greater
than 45,000-50,000 outpatient visits annually.
As a major pediatric center, inpatient services are provided through two
general pediatric units totaling 57 beds; a 9-bed Level I Pediatric Intensive
Care Unit; two nurseries, totaling 48 bassinets, and a 41-bed Level III Neonatal
Intensive Care Unit. Ambulatory services are provided at the Women and
Children's Pavilion in the Outpatient Plaza with clinics in pediatric acute
care, continuity care, adolescent medicine, and pediatric subspecialties.
Residents work side by side with attending physicians, psychologists,
fellows, nurse practitioners, social workers, and child life workers in caring
for pediatric patients and families. We believe the pediatric education at
MetroHealth Medical Center is enhanced by the number of faculty and health care
professionals who provide supervision and teaching; and are readily available
for one-to-one discussions. The faculty, also assist residents with research
projects as most are actively involved in research, both laboratory and
clinical.
