Nephrology (Kidney)

The Division of Nephrology and Hypertension at MetroHealth Medical Center includes eight M.D. and five Ph.D. faculty. The physician staff provides comprehensive clinical care, which includes inpatient and outpatient consultation services for kidney, fluid and electrolyte, acid-base and hypertension disorders. The Nephrology group also manages an outpatient hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis population of over 300 patients. Outpatient dialysis services are provided primarily by  Ohio Renal Care Group, a joint venture between MetroHealth Medical Center, the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and  Renal Care Group, Inc. Patients seeking renal transplantation are referred to appropriate transplant centers, usually within the Cleveland area.

Research and teaching are important Divisional activities. The Division of Nephrology includes a nationally recognized research group, which is funded by multiple grants from the National Institutes of Health to pursue projects which range from defining genetic and molecular mechanisms of kidney disease to establishing optimum delivery of clinical care. In addition, Division faculty participate in a number of investigator-initiated clinical trials (RABO and GCRC). All members of the Nephrology Division are faculty members at Case School of Medicine, and teach kidney physiology, pathophysiology and clinical medicine to first through fourth year Case medical students. Clinical and research fellowship training are available through the ACGME-accredited Case Nephrology Fellowship Program and the NIH-sponsored Nephrology Training Program, respectively.
