Department of Medicine

The Case Department of Medicine at MetroHealth Medical Center is a unique combination of compassionate care, cutting edge technology, an internationally renowned faculty, superior educational programs and focused nationally competitive research programs.

Patient Care

The Department of Medicine blends the newest technology with compassionate, patient-focused care provided by highly trained nationally renowned staff in every subspecialty of medicine. The divisions and clinical centers are listed on the Patient Care page. We welcome patients who seek a primary care physician, desire consultation with a specialist or want access to the highest possible quality of care.

Education

MetroHealth has a primary teaching hospital of the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine since 1917. All faculty in the Department of Medicine have appointments on the faculty of the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

At any given time, approximately 36% of the Case third and fourth year medical students are on the MetroHealth Campus getting clinical training and experience.  The Department of Medicine provides clinical clerkships, acting internships and opportunities for rotations in all subspecialties.

MetroHealth has an excellent reputation nationally for its Internal Medicine Residency Program. We pride ourselves in preparing outstanding internists for careers as leaders in academic and clinical medicine.

The department of Medicine also has accredited fellowship programs in Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Pulmonary, Critical Care, Nephrology, Hematology/Oncology, Infectious Diseases and Rheumatology.

Research

MetroHealth has strong basic and clinical research programs. In 2003 MetroHealth had more than $39,000,000 in research funding mostly from of federal grants and contracts. The majority of this funding is in the Department of Medicine.
