Department of Surgery Pediatric Surgery

The Division of Pediatric Surgery at MetroHealth Medical Center specialist in the management of surgical problems in infants, toddlers, children and adolescents under the age of 18.  Young adults with specific problems are also serviced.  Pediatric surgeons receive extensive surgical training devoted to infants and children.  All MetroHealth surgeons are board-certified by the American Board of Surgery in Pediatric Surgery and are specially qualified and treat congenital malformations, neoplasms and inflammatory conditions occurring throughout childhood. We are committed to excellence in teaching, cutting-edge research programs, and providing the highest quality of care for the surgical needs of the children in Northeast Ohio and the surrounding regions.

Pediatric surgeons operate on conditions on the head all the way down to the feet on a daily basis. Procedures can include non-cardiac thoracic work. Our pediatric surgeons are also responsible for responding to pediatric trauma alerts. Since trauma remains the leading killer of children in the United States, it only makes sense to have those who have additional training in the surgical management of children available to treat this surgical disease.

Pediatric Surgery encompasses diseases that are unique to children or require special expertise.  These diseases include:

  • All hernias and undescended testes in newborns and children
  • Chest wall deformities, such as pectus evcavatum
  • Malformations and tumors of the lung and mediastinum
  • Espophageal atresia and congenital anomalies of the intestine
  • Biliary atresia and hepatobiliary cysts and tumors
  • Abdominal masses and tumors such as Wilm's tumor and neuroblastoma
  • Pediatric colorectal diseases, such ad imperforate anus, Hirschsprung's disease and inflammatory bowel disease
  • Cystic hygromas and tumors of the head and neck
