Functional Electronic Stimulation (FES)
Several orthopaedic-based research programs have enhanced MetroHealth’s reputation in the treatment of neuromuscular injury. The Rehabilitation Engineering Center at MetroHealth is part of Cleveland’s Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) Center, a federally supported center of excellence in research. The center conducts research using implanted electrical stimulation devices to restore hand and arm function, to provide standing and leg movement, and to improve bowel and bladder function for people with paralysis.
