Daniel R. Cooperman, M.D.
Daniel R. Cooperman, M.D., is the head of Pediatric Trauma and Reconstruction Center at the MetroHealth Medical Center. He is also a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery on the faculty of Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine Department of Orthopaedics.
Dr. Cooperman specializes in Pediatric Orthopaedics and will see children with developmental and congenital abnormalities, neuromuscular diseases, and orthopaedic trauma. He specializes in conditions such as Muscular Dystrophy, Cerebral Palsy, Congenital Hip Dysplasia, Club Feet, Myelodysplasia, and Trauma.
Dr. Cooperman has published extensively and lectures regionally and nationally on such topics as “Fractures Involving the Ankle in Children,” “The Consequences of Avascular Necrosis in Congenitally Dislocated Hips,” “The Natural History of Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease,” “Acetabular Dysplasia in the Adult,” “Hip Dislocation in Spastic Cerebral Palsy,” “Late Sequelae of Septic Arthritis of the Hip in Infancy and Childhood,” and “The Chiari Osteotomy in Children and Adolescents.”
He is the Principle Investigator,on a Sprague Memorial Institute Grant for “Fatigue Disruption of Human Cartilage by In Vitro Repetitive Loading;” Principle Investigator, Additionally, he has received a Young Investigators Research Grant, from the Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital Board of Trustees for “The Efficacy of Functional Electrical Stimulation in Muscle Strengthening in Partially Innervated Muscles in Myelodysplastic Children." Also, he is Principle Investigator of a grant from the Rainbow Board of Trustees for “The Longitudinal Assessment of Children with Neuromuscular Disease.”

Michael D. Eppig, M.D.
Michael D. Eppig, M.D. is the head of the Orthopaedic Spine Surgery team at the MetroHealth Medical Center, and is on the faculty of Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine Department of Orthopaedics. He was the President of the Cleveland Orthopaedic Society from 2000 to 2002. He is a member of the CRWU School of Medicine Alumni Board.
Dr. Eppig specializes in complex spine deformities in both adults and children. He manages developmental, congenital, degenerative, and traumatic deformities of the spine. He also treats acute traumatic injuries and fractures of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine. He also treats the common adult problems of spinal stenosis and herniated discs.

Harry H. Hoyen, M.D.
Dr. Hoyen completed his undergraduate training at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and medical school at the Medical College of Wisconsin. After completing the orthopaedic residency at Case Western Reserve University, he chose a hand fellowship at the Cleveland Combined Program at University Hospitals, Cleveland Clinic Foundation, and MetroHealth Medical Center. He finished his training with a European fellowship in AO trauma, shoulder surgery, and nerve reconstruction.
His practice is focused toward upper extremity conditions, neuromuscular diseases, and shoulder surgery. The practice locations are at MetroHealth and Southwest General Health Center.
His research interests center on neuromuscular restoration with functional electrical stimulation. Collaborative grants have been received with the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Case Western Reserve University. These involve basic science endeavors and direct patient programs.

Michael W. Keith, M.D.
Dr. Michael Keith is Chief of the Hand Surgery Service at MetroHealth Medical Center. He has been a member of the Orthopaedic Department and associated with the hospital for over 30 years. He is Professor of Orthopaedics and Biomedical Engineering at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.
Dr. Keith specializes in evaluation and treatment of hand, shoulder, and upper extremity problems. He also treats complex nerve and paralysis problems involving the upper extremity in spinal cord, traumatic brain injury, brachial plexus injury and other peripheral nerve disorders.
Dr. Keith is an internationally known lecturer and has published extensively on restoration of upper extremity hand function in paralyzed persons. He has written several book chapters and co-authored over 60 articles. He is Chairperson of Evidence Based Medical Practice for the American Society for Surgery of the Hand and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. He has chaired efforts to create Evidence Based Clinical Practice Guidelines.

Stephen H. Lacey
Stephen H. Lacey, M.D., is the former chief of the Hand and Upper Extremity Division at MetroHealth Medical Center.
Dr. Lacey has specialized in the treatment of traumatic and developmental disorders of the hand and wrist since 1977. He is particularly interested in patients with arthritis, complex fractures of the wrist, and wrist instability.
Other interests include carpal tunnel sydrome, sports injuries of the wrist, and pediatric hand deformities.
Dr. Lacey is an Associate Professsor at Case Western Reserve University, School of Medicine, Department of Orthopaedics, and Chief of Hand Surgery at University Hospitals.
He has published articles, presented lectures, and served on panels dealing with such topics as "Comprehensive Neuropathies of the Upper Extremities,"
"Surgical Treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis," "Tendon Lacerations in the Hand", "Infections of the Hand", "Dupuytren's Contracture", and "Complex Fractures of the Hand and Wrist." Dr. Lacey has published a review book for plastic and orthopaedic surgeons on various topics in hand surgery.

Kevin J. Malone
Kevin J. Malone, M.D., joined the staff of the department of Orthopaedics in 2007 as a member of the hand and upper extremity reconstruction team. He is also on the faculty at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Department of Orthopaedics.
Dr. Malone was born and raised in Cleveland. He completed medical school in Cincinnati and residency in Orthopaedic Surgery in Detroit. He then spent one year in Seattle completing a fellowship in hand and microvascular surgery, with a heavy emphasis on upper extremity trauma.
His clinical and research interests include traumatic and degenerative conditions of the elbow, forearm, wrist, and hand.
Dr. Malone is a candidate member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Society for Surgery of the Hand.

Timothy A. Moore, M.D.
Timothy A. Moore, M.D. joined the Orthopaedic Spine Team at MetroHealth Medical Center in 2004. He is also an assistant professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine Department of Orthopaedics.
Dr. Moore specializes in Spine and Spine Trauma. He sees both children and adults for a wide range of spinal conditions including arthritis, stenosis, scoliosis, tumor, and posttraumatic deformity. Dr. Moore also treats acute fractures involving the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine.
Dr. Moore has lectured regionally on new advancements in surgery and, more specifically, the development of disc arthroplasty.
His current research projects include quantifying cervical spine injuries, evaluating the effectiveness of graft substitutes for anterior cervical surgery, and investigating the effectiveness of car restraints for spine injuries.

Clyde L. Nash, Jr., M.D.
Clyde L. Nash, Jr., M.D. is professor emeritus of Orthopaedics. Although he has retired as Chairman of the Department and is no longer doing surgery, he still sees outpatients at MetroHealth ambulatory plaza and is working with the orthopaedic resident training program at MetroHealth. He is a consultant to the Orthopaedic Learning Center based in the Department of Orthopaedics, MetroHealth System, and is president of the Brittingham Memorial Library Corporation, the medical library serving the MetroHealth System.
Dr. Nash specialized in Spine and Spinal deformities. He sees patients with conditions including kyphoscoliosis, degenerative arthritis and disc disease, trauma, and other ambulatory problems. Patients who require surgical intervention are referred to the other members of the MetroHealth Orthopaedic staff who specialize in spinal surgery.
Dr. Nash was the Clifford J. Vogt Alumni Service Award Recipient at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 1993, and he was named Physician of the Year by the Visiting Nurse Association in 1987. He is an Honorary Member of the British Scoliosis Research Society; on the Advisory Panel for the American Society of Neurophysiological Monitoring (ASNM); served as the Scoliosis Research Society President in 1982; and a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and Association for Academic Surgery.
He has published numerous articles, abstracts. and book chapters on various topics such as “Spinal Deformities in Cerebral Palsy, “ “Spinal Cord Monitoring and Electrodiagnosis, “ “Neural Monitoring: The Prevention of Intraoperative Injury,” “The Adult Spine,” “Perioperative Management of the Scoliosis Patient,” “Evaluation of the Role of Concave Rib Osteotomies in the Correction of Thoracic Scoliosis,” and “The Biomechanics of the Spine.”

Brendan M. Patterson, M.D.
Brendan M. Patterson, M.D. Chariman of the Department of Orthopaedics at MetroHealth Medical Center, is an Associate Professor atf Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine Department of Orthopaedics, and is a member of the Orthopaedic Trauma Service at MetroHealth.
Dr. Patterson is board-certified in Orthopaedic Surgery and specializes in Orthopaedic Traumatology, care of multiply-injured patients, complex fractures, and total joint reconstruction.
Dr. Patterson is the recipient of the Lewis Clark Wagner Resident Research Award, and the Kappa Delta Award from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. In addition, Dr. Patterson was selected as a member of the American Orthopaedic Association and was elected to the Board of Directors of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association.

John K. Sontich, M.D.
John K. Sontich, M.D. is an orthopaedic surgeon with a specialty in trauma (complex fractures). He is a nationally recognized expert in the field of limb reconstruction and limb lengthening for the treatment of fractures that may not heal with standard methods (nonunion), fractures that become infected (osteomyelitis) or fractures that heal in a shortened or bent position (malunions).
In 1995, he traveled to Kurgan, Russia where he studied limb lengthening from the inventors of the "Ilizarov" technique. He teaches the Taylor Spatial Frame technique (Ilizarov technique), to surgeons nationally. The Spatial Frame is a computer-based limb lengthening technique, developed from NASA engineering, which allows precise correction of bone deformity. Dr. Sontich has published numerous articles on orthopaedic trauma surgery and limb lengthening and reconstruction.
Dr. Sontich has been at Metrohealth Medical Center for 15 years. He is an Associate Professor at Case Western Reserve University. He is on the Executive Board of the Ohio Orthopaedic Society and a board member of the North American Limb Lengthening and Reconstructive Society. He is a member of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He is the current President of the Cleveland Orthopaedic Society.

Heather A. Vallier, M.D.
Heather A. Vallier, M.D. joined the Orthopaedic Trauma Service at MetroHealth Medical Center in 2001. She is also an Associate Professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine Department of Orthopaedics.
Dr. Vallier specializes in Orthopaedic Traumatology with expertise in multiply-injured patients, pelvis and acetabular injuries, and other complex articular fractures of the upper and lower extremities. She also has an interest in foot and ankle surgery.
Dr. Vallier lectures nationally and internationally on her research and on fracture techniques. She was selected by the American Orthopaedic Association as a North American Traveling Fellow in 2005. She is also a faculty member for AO North America, teaching at both basic and advanced fracture courses. In 2005 she received the Howard Rosen Table Instructor Award from AO North America. Dr. Vallier was recently named the C.L. Nash Professor of Orthopaedic Education, the first endowed professorship in orthopaedic surgery at MetroHealth. Dr. Vallier has received numerous research grants over the past several years, including an award from the Orthopaedic Trauma Association to study the effects of surgical timing in multiply-injured patients, and a career development grant from the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation for research on fractures of the lower tibia. Her other current research interests include pelvic fractures in women, comparision of minimally invasive and extensile surgery for calcaneus fractures, and evaluation of locked plating techniques.

John H. Wilber, M.D.
John (Jack) H. Wilber, M.D., is the chief of the Musculoskeletal Trauma Center at MetroHealth Medical Center. Dr. Wilber was one of the first fellowship-trained orthopaedic traumatologists in Cleveland and is recognized as one of the best doctors for traumatology in the U.S., listed in The Best Doctors in America, 2005-07 Editions.
Dr. Wilber specializes in Orthopaedic Trauma with his area of expertise being multiple and complex fractures, pelvic and acetabular fractures, and nonunions and malunions. He also has a special interest in treating problems and injuries of the knee and shoulder, and uses arthroscopic and minimally invasive techniques.
For the past 25 years, Dr. Wilber has taught courses both nationally and internationally on basic and advanced AO/ASIF. He learned AO/ASIF technique in Switzerland and is known for his skill and ability in treating complex fractures using these techniques.
He has served on many committees and is currently the President of AO North America and a trustee on the AO Foundation. He is the recipient of the Charles Herndon Society Resident Paper Award, “Internal Fixation in Children and Adolescent Fractures, Comparative Analysis”; and the John R. Carter, M.D. Teaching Excellence Award. Dr. Wilber is a Professor of orthopaedic surgery at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine Department of Orthopaedics and is the Director of the Orthopaedic Trauma Division.
In addition, Dr. Wilber is an active member of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association and has served on many national committees. He is also a founding member of the International Society for Fracture Repair.
