Emily Saunders Recognized With Prestigious Nursing Award

Monday, January 27, 2014 - Emily Saunders Recognized With Prestigious Nursing Award
(Cleveland) - The DAISY Foundation presented a prestigious award Jan. 21 to a MetroHealth nurse who tended to and helped ensure the well-being of a visitor’s daughter.

Emily Saunders, a nurse with the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, received the DAISY Award after a mother praised the nurse’s work in identifying her daughter’s then-worsening condition and ensuring that she got the care she needed.

"It was truly a shock to be honored in such a nice way," Saunders said. "It's a gift to be able to do what I do every day, and really I am the lucky one to have met the wonderful family that this story came from."

Saunders went well beyond her duty, according to the mother, staying past her shift and taking care of the parents as well as the child.

“She is an excellent nurse and a compassionate caregiver,” the mother said. “Not only does she show these qualities in her nursing skills but has always taken the time to ensure my husband and I are alright. That night she took wonderful and amazing care of our daughter but also made sure we had tissues, water and support.”

The DAISY Award is given to a nurse who meets the needs of the patient by not only providing excellent nursing care but also anticipating the emotional and psychological needs of the patients and their families.

The DAISY Award was established by the DAISY Foundation in memory of J. Patrick Barnes who died at 33 of ITP, an auto-immune disease. The Barnes family was awestruck by the clinical skills, caring and compassion of the nurses who cared for Patrick, so they created this national award to say thank you to nurses everywhere.
